Visitors to the area usually start in Portland. It's best known and has great air, car and even train access. Magnificent waterways all against the dramatic background of Mt. Hood glacier, Portland literally offers something for everyone. Portland is perhaps best known for its annual Rose Festival which has been a tradition for almost a century. Occurring each June, it attracts visitors from around the world. In addition to beautiful roses and world-class rose shows, there is a memorable parade and lots other activities for young and old alike. Of course, the Oregon Brewers Festival in July, with visits to local microbreweries is always popular. The Portland Jazz Festival offers incredible music and events for jazz fans each February. Music in the city isn't limited to jazz. The Oregon Symphony plays regularly in Portland and there are a wide variety of concerts, festivals and musical performances that will suit every taste. Live theatre is also important in Portland, with professional companies performing in several venues. Portland also has a delightful selection of art museums, and galleries, the Portland Children's Museum, and other cultural events and opportunities. Visitors and locals alike love the Oregon Zoo in Portland. Originally named the Washington Park Zoo, it was founded in 1887, literally in the back of a drug store. Today it has world class exhibits and draws visitors from the whole world. Boating, hiking, cycling, golf, hunting and fishing draw many to the great outdoors. There is spectacular skiing and other snow sports in winter at nearby Mt. Hood which, not so by the way, has America 's longest ski season. Portland offers magnificent restaurants, delightful delis, and, of course, a ton of coffee shops with more espresso drinks than you might be able to imagine. Accommodations range from the posh to the prudent.
Lake Oswego Take a leisurely ride on the historic Willamette shore trolley which runs along the west bank of the Willamette River between Portland and Lake Oswego. The six mile rail line runs between Lake Oswego and Portland along the west bank of the Willamette River. Beautiful river views and a trip through “ Oregon 's darkest tunnel” are a few of the highlights of the journey. Of course, you can drive, or even take a boat. Once in Lake Oswego, you'll find plenty of interesting things to do and see. For example, each summer, you'll find the Festival of the Arts. The three-day event, which has been held since 1961, showcases visual arts, performance and artist demonstrations. The Lakewood Theatre Company, located in Lake Oswego, has been offering first-run, year around classical and popular plays on two stages since 1952. From mid-May through the end of October, visitors enjoy the European style Lake Oswego Farmers Market. There you will find the region's best fresh and locally grown products. You'll also park free, hear music and experience entertainment. There are also outstanding restaurants, great lodging, 11 parks and golf.
Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin offer what some call “the country side of Portland.” The area is also part of one of America 's premier wine regions. There are myriad of wineries to visit and hot air balloons to ride if you want to get an overview of the area. Golf is another favorite; Pumpkin Ridge was the site of the 2003 U.S. Women's Open and the 2006 Senior Open. And, of course, there are miles for scenic bike rides or drives, colorful festivals, and great food and lodging. Take some time in our Portland countryside – you'll be glad you did. |
