South of Tigard is the city of Tualatin, which is named to the Native American Indians that hunted there and harvested many of the wild plants found in the area.

A ferry service crossing the Tualatin was established in 1853 by Samuel Galbreath and the town was originally named after him. In 1856, Galbreath built the first bridge across the river and changed the name of the town to Bridgeport. The bridge and ferry service brought in businesses and residents from all over the Willamette Valley.

The Oregon Electric Railroad came to town in 1906 and by 1910 schools had expended to offer a four-year high school. The city was incorporated as Tualatin in 1913.

Tualatin real estate is one of the fastest growing communities in the state of Oregon. Planning for the future is a top priority for both city officials and the people who live there. The goal is to maintain the city's hometown atmosphere and resident participation in the process is encouraged.

Tualatin Oregon Real EstateTualatin also has an active Historical Society and an Arts Advisory Committee that contribute to the city's unique livability.

Tualatin won the Tree City USA designation in 1987, which is why it's also called a “leafy neighborhood.” The city is rightly proud of its beautiful trees and works hard to maintain them. Part of city's dedication to a healthy environment includes the Heritage Tree Program. Individual specimens and tree stands are designated and protected as "Heritage Trees." Each year, up to five new trees or tree stands are selected for Heritage Tree status, through a nomination process administered by the Tualatin Parks Advisory Committee and the City Council. Trees are chosen based on their size, species, quality or historic association. Every April, Tigard celebrates Arbor Week with renewed commitment to tree preservation.

There are more than 200 acres of parks, greenbelts and green spaces in Tualatin. The largest is the Community Park which is 28 acres and graces the Tualatin River. There you will find an award winning skatepark for inline skaters and skatboarders. There is also a very good senior center, community center and school system.

The 19.8 acre Brown's Ferry Park, which opened in 1997, is named for Zenas J. Brown, who operated a ferry which crossed the Tualatin River in the 1850s. The park provides great views and the opportunity to view wildlife. About a third of the park is being restored to native grass and wildflower prairie covering.
