Tigard is a delightful and affordable community only minutes southwest of Portland. It is situated a bit northwest of the city of Lake Oswego.

With a population of almost 50,000, Tigard is a great blend of a small, contemporary city with the spirit and friendliness of a small town. The modern Tigard Civic Center on the Fanno Creek Greenway is an example of the city's forward thinking, as is the new Tigard Library.

Community unity and vision is promoted in part through Tigard's policy of actively encouraging residents to attend the weekly city council meetings and participate in city government through Citizen Involvement Team. The result is truly participatory government whose vision is to manage growth without stifling it and maintain Tigard's livability.

First settled in the 1800s, the town was incorporated in 1961. The downtown area is being restored as an historical jewel. Along Main Street you'll find quaint shops, espresso sidewalk cafes and Tigard Real Estateeateries that are both fashionable and excellent. The balance of the business district offers residents everything they need.

Tigard not only has it's eye on the future; it recognizes and protects its past too. For example, John Tigard, whom the town is named after, built a three room Carpenter Gothic Victorian house in 1880 at the corner of what is now Pacific Highway and Gaarde Street. In the 1970s, the house was threatened with demolition. Fortunately, Tigard Area Historical and Preservation Association stopped the proposed destruction and the house was restored. In 1979, the house was entered in the National Register of Historic Places. Eventually moved to the corner of SW Canterbury Lane and SW 103rd in Tigard, the restored home is open to the public on the third Sunday afternoon of each month to showcase special exhibits.

Home of the Tigard Balloon Festival, which is held in conjunction with Portland's Rose Festival each June, the town has over 300 acres of parks, green belts and natural, protected areas. There is plenty of recreation, as well as excellent schools and a new library.

Tigard loves festivals and regularly joins the Portland Rose Festival with its own celebrations, including the Festival of Balloons held at Cook Park.
