Iron ore was discovered in the area in 1865, spurring growth and in 1886 The Portland and Willamette Valley Railroad linked Oswego to Portland with some seven miles of track. The railroad allowed residential development near the tracks between the two cities. It also set the stage for Lake Oswego to enjoy commercial and cultural interchange with Portland which continues today.
