Beaverton, which is located west of Portland, got its name because it was settled near a large body of water. According to the Oregon Geographic New, that body of water had been formed as a result of beavers building dams. But the story of beavers in the area goes back a long way.

Nestled in the Tualatin Valley, the area was home of a Native American tribe known as the Atfalati or the Tualatin. These hunter-gatherers had a village named Chakeipi, meaning the place of the beaver.

Beaverton Real estate development has always been important (originally referred to as Beaverdam). Lawrence Hall purchased a section of land (640 acres) there in 1847 and built a grist mill. People began settling around the mill.

Thomas Denney's sawmill was built in 1849 which brought more people, and by 1860 a plank road had been built between Portland and Beaverton. The “ease of access” along the plank road meant began building homes close to the road to take advantage of both Portland and Beaverton.
